Transgrid's LiDAR Scan Campaign: A Proactive Approach to Bushfire Risk Mitigation
In a proactive move to enhance safety and mitigate bushfire risks, Transgrid, an electricity network operator, has embarked on an extensive LiDAR scan campaign across its high-voltage transmission network. This initiative, spanning seven months from February to September, showcases Transgrid's commitment to early detection and preventative maintenance.
The campaign involves a combination of aerial patrols and advanced LiDAR technology. Low-flying helicopters equipped with high-resolution cameras conduct visual inspections, while fixed-wing aircraft utilize 3D LiDAR scanning to identify vegetation encroachments near power lines. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive assessment of the network's condition and potential fire hazards.
Jason Krstanoski, Transgrid's Executive General Manager of Network, emphasizes the importance of this proactive strategy: "Preventative maintenance is a cornerstone of our risk reduction efforts. These inspections enable us to pinpoint issues early, prioritize maintenance, and minimize risks across the network, ultimately safeguarding our people, landowners, communities, and the electricity system."
The campaign's interactive map, accessible at https://www.transgrid.com.au/community/network-inspections-and-maintenance-near-you/, provides real-time updates on planned works, fostering transparency and community engagement.
This initiative is not an isolated effort. Across the Tasman, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council has been conducting similar LiDAR scanning of rivers in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Niroy Sumeran, the Council's Engineering Team Leader, highlights the project's significance: "This work enhances our understanding of river dynamics, which is crucial for effective asset management and environmental protection."
The dual approaches of Transgrid and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council demonstrate a broader trend in risk management. By employing advanced LiDAR technology and aerial patrols, these organizations are taking a proactive stance against potential disasters, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for their communities and infrastructure.
